Belindas Back Yard Gardening - Pak Choi Red

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to Belinda's Back Yard Gardening where begginers and expert's are welcome.

Who likes Pak Choi and who has tried Red Giant Leaves?

I tried growing them for the first time last year and I didn't have good results as Aphids got the better of them and they seemed to like certain plant's in my garden, Pak Choi and the Brassica family of the plants in my garden.

I managed to get the Brassicas under control using πŸ’― organic pesticide which I will give you a guide to along with blasting water onto them as they are a soft body insect that usually does the trick once blasted off of the leaves they find it very hard to reestablish and that's usually enough to keep it under control.

So this year I thought I'd do something different so I tried some red actually and it has become very successful.

I have not had to use any type of pesticides on my red pak choi.

I don't know why as they are planted in the same locations as last year.

I have been sowing seeds every couple of weeks so that I get a succession of plants all throughout the year.

The leaves are a beautiful dark deep red , purple and green.

I used plastic containers to grow them in , I use my own compost mix, make sure there were drainage holes as drainage is very important especially in container gardening, I sowed the seeds approximately 3 to 4 inches apart, then lightly covered the seeds with light compost so the seed's can break through. If if it's too heavy or has too many stones in it the seeds won't be able to germinate, I usually sieve my compost whenever I am seed starting.

I will give you the magic recipe for my own Organic compost mix in a different post for help with pests. πŸ‘πŸ˜Š

I use the cut and come again method where you cut the outer leaves of the plant and allow the centre of the plant keep growing giving you a longer harvest. Make sure that you leave enough leaves for photosynthesis, usually about 4, so that the plant can get enough sunlight so it can continue to produce large beautiful red purple and green leaves to enjoy.

Are you growing Pak Choi?

If so what varieties?

You don't need to have acres of land to be able to grow food, all you need is a small space on the window sill indoors if you don't have the garden, a pot, a balcony or small back garden, anyone can grow something.

How do you enjoy it? Do you have any recepies to share?

Please please leave a comment and please slide over to my Facebook group Belinda's Backyard Gardening and slide on back.

If I can't help you someone in out group will.

Thank you all and have a great greenfingered day.
